Field Investigation Observations

Land Use

On-site Landuse
NVF Corp. occupies what may be the original tannery structure.

Adjacent Landuse
The area around this site is a mix of residential, commercial and industrial uses. Residential areas include neighborhoods across Maryland Avenue to the north and across Oak Street to the west. The NVF plant dominates the block, and NVF industrial uses continue south along the western side of Lower Beech Street. The eastern side of Beech Street is a Dupont Office building and parking areas.

Presence of Children

Children are not located in the immediate area. However, across Maryland Avenue to the north, and a block away across Lower Oak Street are residential areas. It is likely the large grass areas and parking lots in the businesses around the plant are used for recreation. There is little area for children to play at the plant; however, debris in gravelly area along Anchorage Street suggests adolescents may frequent it.

Exposed Soil

Small landscaped areas only a few feet wide extend along Lower Beech Street. Along Anchorage Street is a gravel area used for parking.
