Field Investigation Observations

Land Use

On-site Landuse
An Amoco Station, Family Dollar Store and parking area occupy this site. Some of the walls around the parking area are quite old and may date back to the original tannery.

Adjacent Landuse
Row houses along 5th Street back up on Carpenter Street and the site to the north. A community garden is also located at the end of the block uphill from the Amoco Station. To the east is the Interstate 95 right-of-way with only small fenced off areas in grass. To the south is a large Catholic church with a monastery and school. The surrounding area west of I-95 consists largely of row houses.

Presence of Children

No children live on the site. Children do frequent the nearby LACC and Catholic School. Residential homes are all around the area. A community garden backs up on Carpenter Street and the original tannery outline.

Exposed Soil

The majority of surfaces are paved with small areas in grass around the Amoco and tree planters in front of the Family Dollar.

Area covered in grass or mulch: 408 Area of directly exposed soil: 876
