Field Investigation Observations

Land Use

On-site Landuse
An apartment building exists on this site. Around the apartment building is grass and landscaping with some exposed surfaces.

Adjacent Landuse
To the north and west is Asbury Gardens Apartments. The northwest corner of the block is a Methodist Church and graveyard backing up on the Asbury Gardens playground. The rest of the block is apartment buildings with a large number of children present. To the south across 2nd Street are a Budget Rent-a-Car (Site T1) and the Gateway House (Site T20). The surrounding area is mixed residential and commercial uses. Across Walnut Street to the west is the First USA Complex. To the south are the Amtrak rail lines. The area to the north and east is row houses and apartments.

Presence of Children

A large number of children were observed playing on the site and adjoining Site T34.

Exposed Soil

Large grass areas around the apartment building are interspersed with substantial areas of exposed soil especially on the western side.

The results of surface soil sampling showed no tannery waste present but there are some areas of slightly elevated lead in soil around the building. DNREC will coordinate soil remediation with building rehabilitation.
