Field Investigation Observations

Land Use

On-site Landuse
A YMCA Building and parking lot covers almost all of the property. A small play area is located along the northern portion of the property abutting Walnut Street.

Adjacent Landuse
The block including the site is mixed commercial and residential use. North of the YMCA along Walnut Street are mixed-use row houses, a parking area and corner bar. Along the south side of 11th Street are several more row houses, the Knotty Pine Restaurant and a vacant property surrounded by a high fence. The Ministry of Caring Childcare is immediately behind the site to the east with parking along the back used by parents to drop off and pick up their children. Elwyn Inc. (Site T31) is located northeast of the site across 11th Street. Row homes and parking areas are found in the block to the south and MBNA's complex sprawls over four blocks across Walnut Street to the west. The area to the east of the site is a large residential community that heavily uses the YMCA.

Presence of Children

A large number of youth were observed in front of the building, playing in the playground and coming in and out of the daycare behind the YMCA along Wilson Street.

Exposed Soil

A thin landscaped strip runs along 10th and Walnut Streets. It is a heavily mulched area with trees and shrubs with no exposed soil. The play area is heavily mulched.

Area covered in grass or mulch: 4089 Area of directly exposed soil: 30

Conclusion:

No tannery related waste is present in surface soil in the playground area. The rest of the site is occupied by a new multi story building and there is little potential for residual tannery waste in deep soil in the building footprint.
