Field Investigation Observations

Land Use

On-site Landuse
Pierce Leahy occupies the onsite structure, which appears from historical photographs to be the original tannery building.

Adjacent Landuse
The area around this site is in residential and commercial use. The largest residential population is to the west of the main site across Poplar Street/Clifford Brown Walk. High-density row houses are located in this area and a heavily used public park at the southwestern corner of 14th and Poplar Streets. To the north and east of Poplar Street/Clifford Brown Walk is an area of commercial use of older industrial structures. An old tannery warehouse and adjoining structures are used for storage and daycare. South of the site is an area of educational use including the Delaware Skills Center and Howard High School.

Presence of Children

A large number of children were observed playing in the adjacent playground to the west. On the site itself there are few recreational opportunities.

Exposed Soil

Almost the entire area is paved or in cobblestones. Two very small landscaped areas are located at the front of the site.
