Field Investigation Observations

Land Use

On-site Landuse
The majority of this site has already been remediated (DNREC Site DE1109) and is surrounded by a high fence. Only what appears to be the old hide warehouse remains.

Adjacent Landuse
The area around this site is in residential and commercial use. The largest residential population is to the south of the main site below 14th Street. Many row houses are located in this area and a heavily used public park exists at the southwestern corner of 14th and Poplar Streets. East of Poplar Street/Clifford Brown Walk is an area of commercial reuse of older industrial structures. The tannery warehouse and adjoining structures are used for storage and daycare. Further south another old tannery building (Site T30) now houses Pierce Leahy. North of the property are the former horse stables that are now an environmental center. The remediation on Site T24 continues west across Walnut Street to a large area on the adjacent block. Surrounding this isolated area are row houses, parking areas, vacant buildings, the Media Forts Building and an apartment building.

Presence of Children

A large number of children were observed playing in the adjacent playground to the south. The site itself was fenced off and the warehouse presented little in the way of recreational opportunity. A daycare facility was located just north of the warehouse facing the remediated tannery.

Exposed Soil

The remediated area behind the fence is exposed soil, some grass and monitoring wells, but inaccessible. One large tree stands in a mulched area besides the warehouse building. The rest of the area is paved or structure.
