Field Investigation Observations

Land Use

On-site Landuse
The City of Wilmington Adult Center occupies this site. The majority of the historic tannery outline is a paved parking area. Fenced grass areas and a portion of the Adult Center building cover the eastern portion of the tannery extent.

Adjacent Landuse
The area around this site is almost exclusively residential. Row homes and apartments are found to the east, south and west. To the north is Helen Chambers Park. Large areas of exposed soil are found across 5th Street in front of the Harriet Tubman Apartments.

Presence of Children

Children were observed playing in the parking area of the Adult Center. The grass areas themselves are fenced off, however children were playing the exposed backyards of row houses facing Monroe Street.

Exposed Soil

There are large grass areas around the Adult Center located inside a high fence. They did not appear to be used for recreation.

Area covered in grass or mulch: Area of directly exposed soil:

Conclusion:

No tannery related waste was found in surface soil sampling. No further action recommended.
