Field Investigation Observations

Land Use

On-site Landuse
The Gateway House occupies this site. Many residents were observed relaxing on the steps and benches around the structure.

Adjacent Landuse
The block to the north is the Asbury Gardens Apartments and Wilmington Housing Authority (Site T34, 200 Walnut Street & Site T35, 201 Poplar Street). To the east, also in the same block, parcels 101-105 Poplar Street are covered in grass and parking lot. Further east across Poplar Street is found the Sunday Breakfast Mission with a large fenced grass play area. To the west on the same block is the Budget Rent-a-Car (Site T1); across Walnut Street is a landscaped island covered in grass and trees. The First USA complex begins at the northwest corner of 2nd and Walnut Streets. To the south on the same block is more pay parking and across Front Street are the Amtrak Station and railroad tracks. Generally, the area to the east and north is residential apartments and row houses, while to the west are office buildings and to the south the Amtrak rail lines.

Presence of Children

No children were observed playing on the property in ten site visits. The Gateway House appears to house mainly adult residents, though children may frequent the complex. Many children do live in Asbury Gardens and other apartments across 2nd Street to the north.

Exposed Soil

The apartment is surrounded by grassy areas and trees particularly an approximately 20' wide section along 2nd Street and a section of the parking area on the western side of the property is gravel.
