Field Investigation Observations

Land Use

On-site Landuse
The site is almost entirely occupied by a pay parking lot. Several tree planters are found along Front Street.

Adjacent Landuse
On the block to the northeast lies the Asbury Gardens Apartments and Wilmington Housing Authority (Site T34, 200 Walnut Street & Site 35, 201 Poplar Street). To the north on the same block (Site T1, 100 Walnut Street) are the Budget Rent-a-Car and (Site T20, 121 Poplar Street) Gateway House. To the east, also in the same block, 101-105 Poplar are covered in grass and parking area. Further east across Poplar Street is found the Sunday Breakfast Mission with a large fenced grass play area. To the west across Walnut is a landscaped island covered in grass and trees. The First USA complex begins at the northwest corner of 2nd and Walnut. To the south on the block is a more pay parking and across Front St. the Amtrak Station and railroad tracks. Generally, the area to the east and north is residential apartments and row houses, while to the west are office buildings and to the south the Amtrak rail lines.

Presence of Children

No children live on the site and no children were observed playing on the property in four site visits. Many children do live in Asbury Gardens and other apartments across 2nd Street to the north. Although the Gateway House on Site T20 appears from site visits to mainly house older residents, children may frequent the complex.

Exposed Soil

The only possible exposed soil is a row of tree planters along Front Street and a grassy area along Poplar Street that may overlap a small portion of the historic outline.
