Field Investigation Observations

Land Use

On-site Landuse
An apartment complex dominates this site. Row houses, also in the historic tannery outline are found on the north and west sides of the apartments with backyards and small front yards.

Adjacent Landuse
The area around this site is almost entirely row houses. The only exceptions to this pattern are the Harriet Tubman Apartments diagonally across the Monroe and 5th Streets intersection, Helen Chambers Park to the northeast, and the I-95 right-of-way to the west.

Presence of Children

Only a few children were observed in the area on three site visits to this location, however play equipment and toys in the back of residences suggest there are many children in the area.

Exposed Soil

Much of the site is in grass and pavement but large areas remain in soil where there were signs of children having played. Soil is common around the parking area and the backyards of apartments.

Area covered in grass or mulch: 30557 Area of directly exposed soil: 2427

Conclusion:

Surface soil sampling indicated that no tannery waste is present. Extensive subsurface sampling was not performed, but a further investigaiton of historical records indicate that the leather manufacturing facility at this location was a patent leather factory, not a tannery.
