Field Investigation Observations

Land Use

On-site Landuse
A Wilmington Housing Authority apartment currently occupies this site. The structure is located on the western portion of the parcel surrounded by substantial grass areas. A parking area covers most of the eastern side of the parcel. A high fence surrounds the lot.

Adjacent Landuse
This site is located at the center of a residential area with some commercial uses. To the west and south are town houses and apartments in a layout very similar to Compton with front and backyards removed from parking areas. To the east are row houses with no front yards but backyards. North of the site is found a McDonalds restaurant and City of Wilmington playground (Site T14).

Presence of Children

Large grassy areas around the apartment surrounded by a high fence suggest it would be a very good safe place for children to play. In four site visits during the day no children were observed playing in this area, but the geography strongly suggests that children to use the grass and soil areas around the complex. A large number of children also live in the apartments and town homes in the immediate area.

Exposed Soil

Large grassy areas surround the apartment building with exposed soil sections. Soil, trees and grass also ring the parking area.

Area covered in grass or mulch: 7108 Area of directly exposed soil: 790

Conclusion:

No tannery related waste was found in surface sampling. However there is a potential for subsurface contamination. DNREC will coordinate efforts with the Wilmington Housing Authority as the apartment building is refurbished.
