Field Investigation Observations

Land Use

On-site Landuse
A Budget Car Rental facility and pay parking area occupy the site. Budget Car Rental occupies the area along 2nd Street and the northern portion of Walnut Street. The pay parking facility occupies the southern extent of the site.

Adjacent Landuse
The block to the northeast is the Asbury Gardens Apartments and Wilmington Housing Authority (Site T34, 200 Walnut Street & Site T35, 201 Poplar Street). To the northeast on the same block (Site T20, 121 Poplar Street) is Gateway House. To the east, also in the same block 101-105 Poplar are covered in grass and parking area. Further east across Poplar Street is found the Sunday Breakfast Mission with a large fenced grass play area. To the west across Walnut is a landscaped island covered in grass and trees. The First USA complex begins at the northwest corner of 2nd and Walnut. To the south on the block is pay parking and across Front Street the Amtrak Station and railroad tracks. Generally the area to the east and north is residential apartments and row houses, while to the west is office buildings and to the south the Amtrak rail lines.

Presence of Children

No children live on the site and no children were observed playing on the property in four site visits. Many children do live in Asbury Gardens and other apartments across 2nd Street to the north. Although the Gateway House on Site T20 appears from site visits to mainly house older residents, children may frequent the complex.

Exposed Soil

There are no significant areas of exposed soil on the site. The site is almost entirely asphalt and concrete with a very small strip of overgrown vegetation along the fence dividing the Budget car lot from the pay parking area. A gravel parking lot on Site T20 may overlap onto Site T1.
