Investigation of Historical
Tannery Operations

REPORT OF FINDINGS

About the Investigation

Wilmington, Delaware was formerly the second-largest center of tannery operations on the East Coast. Due to the hazards associated with arsenic and other metals related to tannery operations Tetra Tech worked with DNREC to identify, investigate and prioritize areas which have been used in the past for tannery operations. Historical maps, documents and information from residents led to the identification of 128 tannery footprints which were clustered into 53 sites.

Because of the large number of tanneries using hazardous substances (especially arsenic and chromium), each tannery identified on historical maps was thoroughly documented and visual observations including: presence of children, exposed surface soil and land use were recorded on field visits. These observations were used to prioritize tannery sites according to possible impacts to local residents. This report presents the findings of this investigation.
