Potential Benefits of Listing Your Property

The purpose of the following is to inform property owners of the ways in which their future property value and/or use of a Brownfield property may be enhanced by listing it on the Delaware Brownfields Marketplace. You may also contact Melissa Leckie at 302-395-2600, or via e-mail at Melissa.Leckie@state.de.us for more information.

  1. The Delaware Brownfields Marketplace is a free listing service.

  2. Listing your property makes it visible to potential developers, investors, and buyers. There are many individuals and organizations that may be interested in redeveloping Brownfields and other underutilized properties, and use the database as a resource for locating them.

  3. Posting on the Brownfields Marketplace can attract public funding and resources. State, county and federal government may have programs to help address Brownfields with targeted financial and technical help. Listed sites may be eligible for funding and other forms of assistance that would not otherwise be known or available. In addition, when a site is contaminated, posting may invite a prospective purchaser to perform a preliminary environmental assessment and “get the ball rolling.” The prospective purchaser may be eligible for Brownfield grants for investigation and cleanup of the property.

  4. Listing can bring positive focus to issues and possible problems that can be remedied through innovative planning. Your property can be a part of a community vision. An abandoned or underutilized site is a new opportunity to further a community’s image and future plans.

  5. If a property owner is unsure about their desire to sell, posting on the Brownfields Marketplace can help show the potential marketability of the property by generating interest.

  6. Listing on the Brownfields Marketplace and viewing the other listed properties can provide a new perspective on an owner’s property and its marketability. There are lots of properties with suspected or even actual contamination in Delaware. However, the State has many resources and the sincere desire to help a property owner or prospective purchaser. The goal is to cleanup and reuse Brownfields, to everyone’s benefit.
